Dress Code

Effective August 2012 MPUSD Students are expected to Dress For Success!  Appropriate dress is necessary for the healthy, safe and undisturbed operation of school and classes. The following guidelines shall apply to all regular school activities.  Students’ attire should be neat and clean.

The following ARE NOT permitted:

1.      Bare feet; shoes must be worn at all times. House shoes, slippers, flip flops, athletic sandals are unsafe.

2.      Sleeveless or tank top style T-shirts, see-through or fishnet fabrics, halter-tops, spaghetti strap (less than 2”), strapless tops, off-the-shoulder or low-cut tops and skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh. Bare midriffs (the stomach area should not be exposed). Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments (bra/bra straps) at all times. Pajama bottoms unless designated school spirit day. Ripped, torn or ragged clothing (jeans, tops, etc). Sagging pants, over-sized “baggy” clothes. Pants should be worn at waist/hip.

3.      Hats/Caps/Sunglasses except as required for health or safety reasons and approved by the administration. Headgear determined to be worn for religious purposes is fine. Only MPUSD school spirit wear(hats, caps or visors), or a plain black hat are allowed! Pull-over hoods are not to be worn over the head, except outdoors, during rainy/cold weather.  Hats (brim facing forward) and sunglasses are to be worn outdoors only and must be removed immediately upon entering any building or room on campus.

4.      Writing, pictures, or any insignia that are gang related, crude, vulgar, profane or sexually suggestive (“I Love Boobies” items) or reference/promote the use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco; or promote racial, ethnic or religious prejudice.

5.      Clothing that disrupts the effective functioning of the school. Personal items (backpacks, notebooks, gym bags, fanny packs, water bottles, etc) must be free of aftermarket writing, pictures, or insignias that violate Sections # 4 or 6.

6.      Apparel, jewelry, accessory, notebook, or manner of grooming that, by virtue of its color arrangement, trademark or any other attribute, are specifically identifiable as belonging to a disruptive group or gang.  The following are not allowed:

·       All professional sports jerseys, accessories, shirts, hats, lanyards (key holders): SF, LA, Raiders, etc.   Only School/College spirit wear will be allowed.

·       Items with specific California cities, geographic areas, area codes such as 831 and 408.

·       Clothing with reference to SO CAL, NOR CAL, CEN CAL, Cali Life Style, Bay Area.

·       187 Inc., South Pole, Famous brand clothing.

·       Items with a reference to the California flag, map, star or bear.

·       Items with reference to North, South, West or East Side.

·       All bandannas or clothing that resembles a bandanna, regardless of color.

·       Belt buckles with any letters or numbers.

·       Gloves of any color.  During cold weather, gloves (other than red or blue) may be worn outdoors.

MPUSD Administrative Regulation (A.R.) 5132 – Specific clothing and hats determined by the school district or school site to be gang related or inappropriate apparel may be prohibited by the school site’s dress code policy.

Violations will result in parents being contacted, prohibited articles being confiscated and /or the student being required to change their attire. Continued violations will result in progressive disciplinary action.
